Welcome to American Literature 8
The 8th grade literature class focuses on American Literature to augment and extend the students' studies in US History. We begin by comparing and contrasting Native American and Puritan culture, examining sacred narratives and mythologies, connecting the past to the present by viewing modern myths (Batman, Superman etc.) and by writing modern myths. Throughout the year, Literature weaves together reading and writing skills, vocab and word part study, literary terms and genres, content knowledge about American Literature, examination of the adolescent experience and personal connections and self reflection. (See weave visual by clicking on weave.doc) My goal is to heighten students awareness of the vital role that reading and literature play in students' lives while building standards based reading and writing skills.
